Purdys Rebel already has lifetime earnings of over $150,000 according to EquiStat, yet the five-year-old mare had one major obstacle to overcome before setting off on a blazing trail.
That obstacle, her mind.
“He just felt that I needed to ride her a little bit to relieve some of the pressure. She’s so sensitive and I don’t ride as aggressive as he does. [I could] get her to chill a little bit [and say] ‘Hey, let’s just chill a little bit. All we want to do is stop the cow,’” owner Kathleen Moore told Quarter Horse News in an interview from 2022.
That was after the mare’s first major win with Moore in the 4-year-old Non Pro class at the National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA) Summer Spectacular. Moore and trainer James Payne had originally entered Purdys Rebel (Metallic Rebel x Purdy Bet x Bet On Me 498) in the open class but changed their plan when it seemed like that just might be too much.
The heat is back on now, Payne and Purdys Rebel marked a 222 to bring home $10,000 from the Cotton Stakes in West Monroe, La. on September 4.
This year so far, Purdys Rebel has pulled checks at the Augusta Futurity, the Arbuckle, the Cattlemens, the NCHA Super Stakes, The Non Pro, the West Texas Futurity, the Abilene Spectacular and a few other shows.
